  • What's the difference between restorative mediation and regular mediation?

    • Modern, or typical mediation is a facilitative process, that most often consists of a lawyer “directing the traffic” of a dispute between two parties, funneling them into an agreement of resolution.  Restorative mediation draws directly from the indigenous tradition of the Talking Circle, often used in practices of peacemaking.  Parties can include as many or as few participants as they wish, each having an equal opportunity to participate by taking turns in discussions together, geared toward cooperation, self-determination, and resolution.

  • What if my partner/teen/family member won't participate?

    • The best we can do is invite them into the process. Conversation can still take place even if the individual chooses to seat more of a backseat role.  I also offer 1:1 conversations and coaching.  Some of the best results come from a mix of both group and one-on-one sessions with individuals, couples, and families.

  • What does a session cost? Are there payment options?

    • Sessions vary between $75-$125 an hour depending on what we are gathering for.  Sessions are typically an hour.  I also offer a session package that offers a bundle discount for multiple hours/sessions. There is a $50 file-opening charge when we get started.   At this time I am able to work with clients to custom build a plan for them.  Additional time and services are available to add-on.

  • Do you take insurance?

    • I am not able to accept medical insurance for payment.

  • Isn't this basically therapy?

    • It sure can feel like it!  We will open up conversations that will allow you to feel heard and discover things about yourself, your loved one, or your peer that can lead to healing and growth.  While the process will be driven by what you want and need, I will shepherd the discussions along the way so that we are able to learn constructive tools and the next steps for your situation.

  • How do you decide who "wins?"

    • With your help, I will strive to find roads to take where everyone wins in the best ways possible.  The more willing you are to participate in the process, the more you can get out of it.  You will self-determine your outcome.

  • How long does a session take?

    • Sessions are typically an hour, but some can be scheduled for two hours.  I am sensitive to the energy of the discussions and will decide to continue or end sessions depending on the client’s emotional state and the productivity of the conversations.  We can book as many sessions as necessary to reach a resolution.

  • I need help finding a solution with my _______. Can you help?

    • If you’re looking for a safe place and guidance for a solution, using healthy communication and equal participation, I can help!  Together we can tailor a plan around your unique situation.

  • What can I expect during a session?

    • Sessions work best in 45-90 minute increments.  We will begin by agreeing to discuss ethics important to you, which will help keep our time together respectful and focused.  We will work through questions together, where each person is fairly allowed to voice their thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
